The Open Knowledge foundation has as set of Panton Principles – principles for open data in science.

They have also written a draft set of best practice ‘Panton Principles’ for the publication of scientific data.

I have included this here as a general knowledge post. Please be aware that the licensing that they refer to is not Australian. The creative commons licensing that is valid for Australian works can be found at Creative Commons Australia: or the GILF framework (Government Information Licensing Framework) for public sector information which can be found at

The GILF website has an easy to use licensing review which provides the user with a streamlined method for selecting the appropriate GILF license.
