In recent years Australian research and government sector organisations managing significant data holdings have recognised the need for controlled vocabulary services to support access to and inter-operation of their data-sets. In November 2010 The Australian National Data Service (ANDS) and the Office of Spatial Data Management (OSDM) convened a workshop hosted at Geoscience Australia to discuss the role and requirements of vocabulary technologies and to explore the creation of a national vocabulary service.
At the completion of the workshop there was broad agreement that ANDS, OSDM and ABS should start the process of defining and implementing a national vocabularies service and report back to the workshop attendees on the progress of this effort.
To ensure that such a service is developed in consultation with the research community we are calling for qualified people to participate in a Technical Working Group that would provide technical guidance to ANDS, OSDM and ABS during the development and deployment of a national vocabulary service.
Working group members would need to have expertise in vocabulary service and identifier technologies and standards including RDF, SKOS and DOIs. Expertise in ontologies, OWL and web services would be helpful but not essential.
We would expect the group to meet 3-4 times per year via videoconference and for working group members to contribute to discussions at other times via email, wiki and other communication tools. If the group requires face to face meetings ANDS will fund meeting travel expenses.
Please contact Stuart Hungerford at ANDS (firstname.lastname@example.org
) if you are interested in participating and please forward this call to other interested people who were not at the November workshop.
