Multiple termIdentifiers for same subject
Author Message
Before I revise the change proposal "TermIdentifier attribute for subject" there was a query recorded in the minutes that I'm seeking further clarification and feedback on:

From the minutes:
Quote:
How will those parties with multiple associated URIs be handled? How will ORCA resolve this? How will these be displayed in RDA?  ANDS to come up with a revised proposal covering this item.

As background, because the goal was to maintain backwards compatibility and also not to have a mixed content model for any elements, we did not propose a structured model for subject and constrained ourselves to what was possible using element attributes so that the content for subject was still a string.

This has the side effect of requiring multiple subject elements for what could be the same concept or person/organisation. Not ideal, but pragmatic in this case.

Parties with multiple identifiers

There are two options:
  • Do as one would with a concept with multiple terms from different schemes (see below)
    <subject type="AU-ANL:PEAU" termIdentifier="http://nla.gov.au/nla.party-484192">Hill, Robin (1932-)</subject>
    <subject type="ulan" termIdentifier="500012144">Hill, Robin</subject>
  • or just supply the NLA identifier and rely on the user to discover other identifiers in the Trove record (assuming that they have been supplied by a contributor):
    <subject type="AU-ANL:PEAU" termIdentifier="http://nla.gov.au/nla.party-484192">Hill, Robin (1932-)</subject>

RDA would display any URI as an actionable link, but could be configured to display specific subject types in a certain way eg
  • type="AU-ANL:PEAU" could be configured to display as "See Trove entry"
  • type="ULAN" could be configured to display "See Union List on Artists' names from Getty Institute"

Topics - multiple identifiers example
<subject type="mesh" termIdentifier="F01.145.126.350">Depression</subject>
<subject type="lcsh" termIdentifier="http://id.loc.gov/authorities/sh85037053">Depression Mental</subject>

I tend to think that partners shouldn't have to maintain multiple equivalent identifiers themselves. Ideally it should not matter which of a party's identifiers they use - the RDA portal should look the party up in Trove and behave equivalently.
