For the purpose of the RIF-CS Advisory Board review and approval of the new description type vocabulary terms, the attached document will give the Board an overview of the intent and purpose of the new vocabulary types, as requested in the last RAB meeting. Please take note that the vocabulary terms corresponding texts in Research Data Australia are still being reviewed and are still subject to change. The sample screenshots in the Overview document (attached) do not necessary reflect the final texts in Research Data Australia.

Your approval on the proposed vocabulary terms is highly appreciated.

Proposed vocabulary terms:
    Term: ResearchAreas
Text in Research Data Australia: Research and Key Research Areas
Description: Text describing a contributor’s research portfolio and research strength.
    Term: ResearchDataProfile
Text in Researh Data Australia: Research Data Profile
Description: Text describing and highlighting the research data, researchers, services and activities the contributor has provided to Research Data Australia.
    Term: ResearchSupport
Text in Research Data Australia: Research Support
Description: Text detailing a contributors research services, expertise or training. E.g. Reference to the contributor’s data management policy/procedure, metadata store or research repository facilities.

I broadly support this proposal, but do have a couple of minor questions:

- Are all of the sub-elements really mandatory for contributors who wish their contributor party record? I don't think they all should be mandatory. ResearchDataProfile for example, is auto-generated so contributors shouldn't have to include it unless they want to augment this information.

- The RIF-CS example contains bullet points. It should use the appropriate HTML markup for bullets.

- The impact on content providers section says If people provide this stuff but don't elect to have a contributor page, presumably we will just roll the display in with the rest of the description? if so should say so. I agree with rolling it in. Suggest making a decision and incluing it in the document.

Hi Nigel,

Thank you for providing your support to this change proposal. Please find below responses to your questions:

- Are all of the sub-elements really mandatory for contributors who wish their contributor party record? I don't think they all should be mandatory. ResearchDataProfile for example, is auto-generated so contributors shouldn't have to include it unless they want to augment this information.
Ans. None of the sub-elements are mandatory. Contributors are free to publish the page with just the system generated text.

- The RIF-CS example contains bullet points. It should use the appropriate HTML markup for bullets.
Ans. Not all providers use HTML. This is an existing description taken from the registry.

- The impact on content providers section says If people provide this stuff but don't elect to have a contributor page, presumably we will just roll the display in with the rest of the description? if so should say so. I agree with rolling it in. Suggest making a decision and incluing it in the document.
Ans. This comment should have been removed from the doc before posting. Apologies. If the new description types are included in a non-contributor page, the descriptions will be appended onto any other descriptions provided in the record.

Kind regards, Cel

Hi Cel,

Thanks for the clarifications.

Although you say the sub-elements aren't mandatory - the document does. It needs to be updated.
