Update on data citation activities at Griffith

Hi all - we are planning to send ANDS a more formal interim report about our project towards the end of January but I just thought that I would let you know what we've been up to so far.

The project team consists of:

    Natasha Simons - Natasha is focusing on DOI minting and maintenance infrastructure, as well as policy frameworks
    Stacey Lee - Stacey is focusing on bibliometrics and altmetrics
    me - I'm focusing on communications, advocacy and culture change aspects.

We've each been focusing on different things as noted above but a summary of the work of the team so far is:

Professional development
    Attended data citation related presentations at the eResearch Conference
    Attended ANDS data citation webinars as well as the Data Citation Index webinar run by Thompson Reuters

Bibliometrics and altmetrics
    Established the annual cost for a Griffith institutional licence for the Data Citation Index
    Agreed with Thompson Reuters to have a 1-month trial of the Data Citation Index in 2013
    Investigated ORCID ID self-registration process (required for ImpactStory)
    Fed back to ANDS the requirement for investigating a national approach to licensing for the Data Citation Index

Advocacy and culture change
    Ran an information session for subject librarians about data citation
    Sought volunteer subject librarians - 4 librarians (about a third of the staff from this team) have volunteered to be involved
    Met with 2 of the volunteer librarians to seek background information about citation patterns and impact motivations in their disciplines (creative arts and humanities, and health)
    Started investigating barriers such as the low visibility of data citation within common style guides, institutional training programs on referencing and bibliographic referencing tools

Communications and knowledge sharing
    Contributed to the catch-up meeting at the eResearch Conference in November
    Contributed to the ANDS Data Citation Summit in December
    Established a project blog - 3 posts have been added so far and there have been 237 pageviews

Tasks that we have identified for completion in 2013 include:
    Complete policy document and associated guidelines available for relevant staff
    Investigate any legacy collections in the repositories feeding DCI
    Ensure DOI infrastructure is included in roadmaps for research data self-submission (RDSS) and repositories projects
    Share PHP script for minting DOIs
    Evaluate TERN form for DOI maintenance
    Develop targeted comms for data collection owners
    Develop methodologies for bibliometrics (including tool selection)
    Use ImpactStory to produce reports on selected data collection owners
    Trial bibliometrics methods to produce reports on selected data collection owners
    Evaluate altmetrics methods trialled
    Evaluate formal bibliometrics methods trialled
    Watching brief on Scopus developments
    Contribute to ANDS clinics
    Contribute to eResearch Australasia 2013

This is turning out to be a surprisingly complex area to be investigating, so there should be some good findings to report back to the ANDS community in 2013.
