Saying What You Mean: Developing Controlled Vocabulary Services for Australian Research

Convened by the Australian National Data Service and Geoscience Australia

Purpose: To promote shared approaches to standardised vocabularies and vocabulary services used by the research and public sector.

Background: A number of the NCRIS facilities and other national research facilities are starting to use or scope vocabulary services in their data aggregation systems and community portals. Many other research groups use standardised vocabularies within their international disciplines or research communities. Reference datasets from government agencies increasingly rely on tightly defined terms. This workshop is to bring together players from some of these areas to share information about current practice and to map out potential shared technical architectures and governance frameworks. ANDS also seeks feedback on the role of its planned vocabulary publishing infrastructure in an ecology of interoperable vocabulary services.

Who should attend: The workshop aims to map out shared approaches to governance and technical architecture, and as such will be limited in size to 35 invited attendees form government and research data facilities.
