one of the questions we're faced with in designing a general purpose data repository is how big is the average dataset?

Datasets of course vary widely in size and type. For example field survey data can be small and concise or massive if accompanied by image data. Much the same can be said of experimental data.

And of course anthropological field studies with their increasing use of video are something else again.

I'd be grateful if you could email me the median and modal size of objects in your data repository and indicate the discipline if your repository is discipline specific.

I'll summarise and post the results in due course
