Feedback has been received from partners that the current RIF-CS information model does not adequately support linking between data collections and related publications. Richer relationships between publications and data collections would allow users to:

• Discover other publications relevant to a data collection.
• Discover other entities (data collections, activities, etc) relevant to a publication.
• Understand how a collection has been used previously.
• Understand outputs that have flowed from research activity.
• Better assess the value of a data collection by reviewing related publications.
• Identify parties for collaboration.
• Identify areas for further research.

Publications can currently be encoded in RIF-CS v1.4 through the use of the Related Info element with a type=”publication”. The Related Info element allows users to enter a Title, Identifier and Note relevant to a publication as shown below.

<relatedInfo type="publication">
<identifier type="uri"></identifier>
<title>Series of Detailed Turbulence Measurements in a Small Subtropical Estuarine System</title>
<notes>Contains additional information about this dataset including calibration and data accuracy.</notes>

Limitations identified with the current encoding include the inability to:
• express many to many relationships between publication, datasets, parties and grants;
• express the relationship between a publication and dataset ( eg. basedOn, supplementTo)
• describe the publication type (eg. journal article, conference paper, report)
• provide structured information about the publication (eg. doi, publication year, co-authors, abstract)

ANDS has been asked to consider the addition of a new registry object for “Publications” in order to support encoding of information about publications as an independent registry object rather than as an attribute of a registry object.
